Water Sustainability

Western supply dam early October 2010

Rhodes University Facilities Department, within the Division of Infrastructure and Operations, is making determined efforts to reduce consumption of water, bearing in mind the ongoing water pressure and water supply problems in Grahamstown. Download Grahamstown Water Pamphlet.

The town’s water supply is not reliable for a number of reasons: ageing infrastructure, operational issues, unreliable rainfall patterns and intermittent droughts. The high lying areas of Rhodes University campus have problems with water service delivery due to lack of water pressure.

The Division of Infrastructure and Operations appeals to staff and students to be part of the solution and use water responsibly and sparingly, and observe these water saving practices. In the event of water cuts, please note that Rhodes University has a number of back-up water supplies on campus - RU backup water supplies 2010. This includes tanks that are filled with drinking water.

Facilities Management is also in the process of installing rainwater tanks where possible, beginning with areas of highest priority.
