Supporting Rhodes Staff and Their Children
As part of the Vice-Chancellor's Pathways to Education initiative, the Community Engagement Division established Vulindlela, a parent engagement programme. The programme works with Rhodes University staff and their children to improve their children's access to higher education.
Through literacy support (ECD) and tutoring and mentoring at the top end of schooling (Grade 8 to 12), the children of Rhodes University staff are assisted in improving their literacy levels and their school performance to a level where they can achieve a bachelors pass in their matric exams.
Also, the way parents manage their homes has a significant impact on the educational development of their children. A home that is managed appropriately delivers good educational outcomes, whereas a home that is mismanaged produces poor educational outcomes. The programme also works with parents to build on skills that can help to effectively support their children's success, such as financial and digital literacies.
Vulindlela facilitates:
- Learner Support - tutoring and mentoring for High School learners
- Engaged Citizenry- Rhodes students volunteer to tutor and mentor learners, receiving an accredited short course in Tutoring and Mentoring (with the Education Faculty)
- Parent Support - skills development
- Financial Literacy Service Learning with GBS Bank
- Computer Skills Training with the Social Innovation Hub
- Service Learning Opportunities -
- School of Journalism and Media Studies Service Learning with Writing and Editing 4 students
- Management Department Service Learning with Honours students
- #SDCardMakhanda - a city wide campaign to equip all Matric learners with SD cards and study materials, annually
The Personal Financial Skills course is a partnership with GBS Mutual Bank and Rhodes University Department of Management. The course offers basic financial management skills which they can intern share with their families and with their communities. It involves a theroretical and practical component.
