The Association of Old Rhodians, a vibrant community of Rhodes University alumni, has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the election of Professor Rosa Klein as President and Mr. Qondakele Sompondo as Deputy President. These visionary leaders bring a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to their roles, and they are poised to shape the future of the Association and foster a more profound connection among its members.

Professor Klein, an Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry at Rhodes University, has been an integral part of the institution's fabric for over two decades. Her inspiring journey from lecturer to researcher and President of the Association of Old Rhodians underscores her commitment to the university's values and mission.

"I have been a member of the Old Rhodian since my graduation in 2000, and I have seen the excellent leadership of Rod Walker in serving the Association. So, when he asked me to stand, I did not hesitate to say yes," Professor Klein shared, reflecting on her inspiration to take on the role.

As President, Professor Klein aims to leverage her experiences as a lecturer and researcher to benefit the Association. She emphasises the significance of alumni engagement in supporting the university's mission, stating, "Alumni represent us out in the world, and they hold us accountable to maintain our reputation for integrity and excellence in the here and now."

Professor Klein's vision for the Association encompasses the following: supporting branch activities and regional events, expanding membership engagement and participation, fostering a sense of community among alumni, and enhancing collaboration between alumni and the university.

Mr. Sompondo, CEO of United Through Sport and a proud alumnus of Rhodes University, brings a unique blend of leadership expertise and passion to his role as Deputy President. His motivation for taking on this leadership position stems from his positive experiences as a student and staff member.

"Rhodes gave me a lot of good memories as a staff member and the rugby club coach. I felt the same while studying for my post-graduate qualifications at the University. It is a very supportive environment that I wish to keep for the next generation to experience," Mr Sompondo shared.

Both leaders envision a vibrant and inclusive association where alumni can connect, share experiences, and support one another. Professor Klein hopes to leave a legacy of diversity, collaboration, and a strong alumni network.  Similarly, Mr. Sompondo aims to increase membership engagement and participation, support bursaries for members' children and enhance alumni relations and communication.

Strategies to achieve these goals include supporting regional activities and listening to members, fostering community through virtual events, WhatsApp groups and storytelling, enhancing collaboration between alumni and the university, developing a bi-annual association newsletter, and creating a comprehensive database of members.

The Association of Old Rhodians recognises the importance of technology in alumni engagement. Professor Klein and Mr Sompondo envision a future where virtual events, social media and digital platforms facilitate connections among members. "We need to be visible as the association, which will require a closer working relationship with the Alumni Relations Office," Mr Sompondo emphasised.

The Association is poised to become more visible, vibrant, and inclusive, embracing the challenges and opportunities of the future. With a shared vision and passion, Professor Klein and Mr Sompondo hope to create a dynamic, supportive network with a profound sense of community among Rhodes University alumni.
