Human Rights Weeks

Award-winning choreographer Athena Mazarakis comes to Grahamstown this week, for two shows at the Rhodes Box Theatre. She will be performing an original piece of work, commissioned to highlight Human Rights Week, which is entitled Standing By.

The piece is described as a combination of evocative gestural language with the provocative use of multi-media elements, and it explores the notion of responsibility, or “response-ability” in the face of violence.

Mazarakis has worked with leading South African companies, such as The First Physical Theatre Company and the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative.

She has worked with independent choreographers, such as Juanita Finestone-Praeg and Gerard Bester, and with renowned theatre practitioners such as Andrew Buckland and Craig Morris. Other prominent artists she has worked with include Gary Gordon, PJ Sabbagah, Jeanette Ginslov, Boyzie Cekwana and Gregory Maqoma.

Mazarakis also held the position of Lecturer in the Wits University School of Arts where she taught Physical Theatre, Choreography and Mime.

As a choreographer Mazarakis has most recently been exploring the relationship between the body and a live interactive digital arts interface in performance while investigating the notion of somatic memory. She is no stranger to Grahamstown and the National Arts Festival, having won the Silver 2010 Standard Bank Ovation Award in the Physical Theatre category for elev(i)ate 2.
