Music Student Conducts Original Work in Italy

Gareth Walwyn, a PhD student at Rhodes Music Department, has been invited to perform his "Youth Day Suite" at the Parma Frontiere Festival in Parma, Italy. The suite is a programmatic work about the Soweto riots which occurred in 1976. South African vocalist Ntombesizwe Vabaza will accompany Walwyn to participate in the performance, for which Walwyn will conduct the Boito Conservatory Orchestra.

Earlier this year, Rhodes Music Department HOD Prof Marc Duby invited Roberto Bonati, a visiting conductor and composer from Italy, to spend two weeks at the Rhodes Music Department. On speaking to Walwyn, Bonati was interested to learn that Walwyn had composed a programmatic work about the 1976 Soweto riots, titled "Youth Day Suite". This work formed the composition portfolio which Walwyn had submitted for his masters degree at UCT.

On his return to Italy, Bonati arranged for Walwyn and a South African vocalist of Walwyn's choice to be invited to perform the "Youth Day Suite" at the Parma Frontiere Festival. Walwyn is excited about this opportunity, and looks forward to the experience of working with the Boito Conservatory Orchestra - and for the chance to share South African music and history with people from another part of the world.
