A win (d)-win (d) situation?

While the debate about wind farms in the region continues, Rhodes University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Innowind, the potential developers of the Waainek Wind Farm. The MoU provides the basis for their further co-operation in relation to the wind farm development project, should the proposed development be granted permission to go ahead.?

The role of the University would be as a knowledge partner, not as a business partner. The University supported the project between Innowind and Makana Municipality in principle, but has kept the door open to doing research if and when the project is up and running.

The MoU essentially revolves around three elements: research work; exploring ways in which the generated electricity can be used for expansion at the University; and advising on ways in which the Winds of Change Trust can build capacity and benefit local learners and educational institutions.

Students and staff across the different faculties of the University will study the impact of the wind farm, both positive and negative, and publish the results in academic journals as well as other publications and media. They may also take on the preparation and publication of wind energy related Case Studies and Feasibility Study projects with Innowind’s support, based on the Grahamstown experience or other possible wind farm projects being developed by them.

The University has undertaken to approach the Makana Municipality for usage of the additional megawatts generated by the wind farm in order to meet the increased demand for electricity from new residences and teaching facilities. The meeting of these objectives on campus will be done with the help of the Rhodes Environmental Committee.

The Winds of Change Trust has been set up as the BBBEE component of the business and will be entitled to 26% of the profits. Rhodes will have two representatives on the Board of the Trust and will thus play a Trustee role in the disbursement of funds for bursaries and scholarships to local learners and the upgrading of educational infrastructure in Grahamstown.

The wind farm development project at Waainek has not yet been finalised. Public meetings will be held to consult with affected parties and give stakeholders the opportunity to air their views and lodge objections.
