Dr Sinethemba Xoxo

Degree: PhD (Hydrology)
First Year of Registration:2021
Sinetemba describes himself as an emerging sustainability scientist. He holds a BSc degree (majoring in Geology and Environmental Science), a BSc with honours degree in Environmental Science, and an MSc (in Water Resource Science), all from Rhodes University. His MSc explored the benefit of ecological infrastructure investments in rural areas as a drought mitigation strategy. Some of his theoretical and practical capabilities include: land degradation evaluation, ecosystem restoration planning, remote sensing & GIS, multi-criteria decision analysis, ecohydrology of semi-arid systems, and Nature-based solutions for water security. As a PhD candidate in hydrology, he shifts his focus to socio-hydrology testing a participatory tool for water allocation assessment tool operating at a sub-catchment level. The tool combines uncertain hydrological data, socio-economic, and environmental values of water-users to evaluate the impact of water supply shortfalls on individual users, the community and the environment. With his research, Sinetemba hopes to demonstrate the importance of managing water resources both sustainably and equitably with the help of evidence-driven solutions.
