2nd Annual Spelling Bee Invitation.

The 2nd VW Legacy Literacy Programme's Annual Interschools Spelling Bee Competition took place on the 5th September 2024 in  recognition of International Literacy Day that is celebrated annually on the 8th September. Learners, parents and staff from all five (5) of the VW Schools in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage participated in the event. This includes Mjuleni Primary School, Mqhayi Primary School, Nokhwezi Primary School, Phindubuye Primary School and Stephen Nkomo Primary School. The Annual Interschools Spelling Bee Competition has four (4) categories; isiXhosa for Grade 1, 2 and 3 and English for Grade 3, with the top four (4) learners in each category representing their school in the competition. The judges for the 2nd VW Legacy Literacy Programme's Annual Interschool Spelling Bee are Judge Pretty Magangxa (B.Ed. Foundation Phase Coordinator at Rhodes University), Judge Tabisa Booi (Project Specialist for Funda Wande’s Advanced Certificate in Foundation Phase Literacy), and Judge Zameka (Zaza) Lubelwana (Lead: Eastern Cape Intervention for Funda Wande).
A key element to the development of literacy skills in learners is to develop the literacy environment in which they learn. This fundamentally involves developing a culture of reading in the school as well as in the homes and surrounding communities. The Interschools Spelling Bee Competition was therefore included in the VW Legacy Literacy Programme as one of the main Advocacy Initiatives to enhance the culture and love of reading.
