RUCE Literacy Programmes
RUCE Literacy Programmes are part of the Makhanda Literacy Collective, a city-wide effort to improve literacy in Makhanda at the foundational phase. These programmes run holistically in schools, community centres and organisations to address various facets of Foundation Phase education. The RUCE programmes comprise BuddingQ, Project READ and Reading Clubs.
Addressing literacy at the Foundation Phase is essential to the success of learners as they progress in their Education. Reading in schools is no longer taught fromt the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4) which vastly impacts their learning and success throughout their schooling. The Collective came together to address this challenge at various levels.
BuddingQ
BuddingQ (Grade R) helps children bloom into their full emotional and intellectual potential through fun, play-based physical activities. Weekly sessions are structured to facilitate learning fine and gross motor skills that will contribute to the physical aspects required for reading.
Project Read
Project Read (Grade 1) aims to help learners entering school with the formal aspects of literacy. You will be exposed to a structured programme of activities to complete with a small group of children on a weekly basis.
Reading Clubs
Reading Clubs (Grade 2 and 3) aims to encourage children to read for enjoyment and not fear reading. You will be trained on the fundamentals of facilitating a reading club through the CE Orientation to Reading Clubs (CERCO) short course, accredited through RU and pitched at NQF 5.
- ECD Home Literacy Resources - a collection of resources for parents and teachers to use with children at home. This was created during COVID-19 in 2020 and features content in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans.
