High School Tutoring and Mentoring

High School Tutoring and Mentoring is a collaboration between Rhodes University and five organisations:

HSTM matches student volunteers with a community partner site to establish mutually-beneficial relationships and use their skills to tutor and mentor high school learners.

Volunteers work with learners from Grades 8 to 12, either individually or in small groups (depending on number of learners). The volunteers engage in structured support around subject and or homework related content. Volunteers are required to meet with learners at least once per week for 1 hour.

Volunteers are trained in community engagement, tutoring and mentoring and are awarded a certificate of competence upon successful completion of the course. This training takes place before volunteering starts.

The programme is open to Rhodes University students (first year to postgraduate and including international students). Staff are also encouraged to join.  Your placement is dependent on your choice, volunteering opportunities available, and of course, your timetable.
