He is a Senior Lecturer at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art (Makerere University) where he teaches ceramics and the history of art.
He obtained degrees in law and fine art from the Makerere University in Uganda and he studied for his doctorate in the history of art at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Residing in a country (and continent) whose present and future are interrupted by ruthless politicians and dictatorial regimes, Kakande interrogates ways in which art functions in the defence of individual and collective rights. He has exhibited artworks and published articles in this area. He is currently completing his post-doctoral research on art, human rights and development in Uganda.
