To promote and advance scholarship in African languages,

To promote multilingualism through 1st and 2nd language programmes, and

To facilitate student access and retention, particularly of historically disadvantaged students.

Our Vision and mission
Our aim is to further the intellectualisation of isiXhosa so that it can be used across disciplines at various levels of education. Objectives of the African Language Studies Department
- To promote and advance scholarship in African languages,
- To promote multilingualism through 2nd language acquisition programmes,
- To facilitate student access and retention,
- To set up a multimedia facility which is instrumental to all the above.
Students in African Language Studies can be assured of the real practice of ubuntu (the spirit of humanity, sharing and togetherness).
