On Monday 16 May 2016 the Department of Accounting, together with the Office of Equity and Institutional Culture, was pleased to host Mr Richard Rogers from Bendels Consulting in Port Elizabeth for a lunchtime seminar.
Richard's seminar was the first of a number of seminars being hosted on Rhodes University campus as part of Disability Week 2016, with the emphasis being on bringing awareness of Disability and related issues into the academic space as part of the greater discourse on Disability.
Richard's presentation focused on tax concessions available to persons who have a family member with (a) severe limitation(s) compared to those who have a family member that suffers from a "disability". He also discussed the advances made in what qualifies as deductible expenditure for tax purposes, and illustrated the effects of the change in legislation from the medical deduction previously granted in terms of section 18 to the medical rebate now granted in terms of section 6B of the Income Tax Act, much of which is aimed at achieving equal treatment of all taxpayers who earn and pay tax at different levels.
The presentation was well received by all in attendance.
